A surge protector is a good idea for any RV. The next step up is a device that will also check that the wiring, voltage, and current are correct before allowing power into your RV. The easiest option is to buy one that plugs into the campground pedestal and then you plug your RV into it. It is then a extra item you need to worry about, it sits out in the elements, and there are concerns about theft. The other option is to hardwired it inside the RV. That is what I chose to do.
I decided to use the Hughes Power Watch Dog with EPO. Southwire and Progressive Industries also make popular options. The Hughes offers bluetooth connectivity which shows a power consumption meter which worked nice for sizing my electrical needs. It also allows you to clear over current errors. I have found that the Watch Dog will trip on over current before the pedestal breaker. Which means I can reset the power from my phone in the RV without going outside.
